Consulate

A Consulate (address: Consulate) is an appointed representative of one of the Inner Duchies. This representative is rarely a noble themselves, but instead almost always an adventurer of renown. This is due to a marked tendency for nobles engaging in politics within the Fortress to suffer early and unexpected deaths. Consequently, appointing a powerful adventurer who sees eye to eye with a Duke is the safest way for a noble house to conduct political affairs. The Consulate, of course, frequently meets with his or her Duke to consult on affairs and is always given a special room in the Duke’s manor—a room always fitted with a ghastly deathtrap that tends to activate in the event of the adventurer’s betrayal of the Duke’s interests.

Given the nature of the position of the Consulate, many are ambitious, paranoid scoundrels. They are eminently aware of how replaceable they are, yet many cherish the job as an opportunity to both influence the world and to match wits with some of the finest in the Empire. The few Consulates who retire due to old age speak fondly of the vicissitudes of the “Great Game,” and will occasionally offer tidbits of advice to newcomers if sufficiently bribed.

Currently, the only Consulate the party has met so far has been the inimitable Barney, representative of House Orduval.
